Crowdsourcing instead of searching: whoever spots new firmware adds it with links to changelog and download. After a quick check everyone sees it, and you get the heads-up for your gear.

Different doesn't mean older.
Version numbers like 1.40A, 2.0.2 or 5.2 can't be compared reliably. So gearald only checks whether your firmware differs from the current release. That's unambiguous and means no false alarms.
